Webinar: Learning what antimicrobials can offer your polymer products

A webinar, held by SANITIZED AG and IMCD Brasil, discussed technical aspects of antimicrobial polymer treatment based on questions raised by participants. The plastics industry lacks official and local standards for technical specification of antimicrobial use in plastic products.

Liliana Rubio, Business Development Manager Latin America is sure: «Such official technical standards would help drive end-user demand for antimicrobial products.» In a hospital environment for example, an official technical standard for polymer products with antimicrobial action would be useful, she adds.

Participants in the webinar wanted to learn more about our experience with applications that demonstrate the efficacy and durability of antimicrobial technologies in main industry divisions such as food, automotive, and white goods, like washing machines or refrigerators. Participants also search for comprehensive solutions for PVC. Sanitized® products are biocides with electrophilic, lytic, or oxidizing active ingredients. «This unique formulation prevents the formation of mildew spots, growth of fungi, manifestation of pink stain, and growth of algae, effectively heading off any negative effects on the PVC material», explains Liliana Rubio.

Solutions with antiviral performance

In a year marked by problems caused worldwide by the Corona pandemic, customers want to learn more about the difference between bacteria and viruses and if Sanitized® products are effective against viruses.

«The existing Sanitized® product portfolio has been scientifically proven to have an effect against human coronavirus types», says Liliana Rubio proudly. The products were tested under the standard test method for determining the antiviral activity of plastics products, ISO 21702:2019 (Plastics and non-porous surfaces), explains Liliana Rubio.

The webinar discussed aspects such as pricing differences for treated and untreated articles. The plastic industry in Brazil is oriented to price and production cost reduction. It is challenging for customers to agree on a price difference between an article with and one without antimicrobial properties based on in-depth cost-benefit analysis in the final application. The SANITIZED and IMCD Brasil experts informed participants about the importance of an antimicrobial application and its environmental, economic, and well-being impacts.

Other popular topics discussed included test methods to guarantee the effectiveness and durability of the antimicrobial technologies against bacteria, fundi, yeast or algae in the articles. Liliana Rubio reassures, «rigorous tests under international standards confirm the efficacy of Sanitized® technology against a wide spectrum of gram positive bacteria (eg. Staphylococcus aureus), gram negative bacteria (eg. Escherichia coli), fungi (eg. Aspergillus niger), molds, and algae.»

Integrated and long-lasting material protection

The Sanitized® hygiene function controls germs 24 hours a day; it is designed to break the chain of bacterial growth by interfering with the metabolic process in a durable way under conditions of humidity and temperature. Polymers treated with Sanitized® in critical environments such as hospitals still need to be disinfected regularly. But the integrated hygiene function provides protection for the surfaces between cleaning or disinfectant cycles by reducing bacteria on the surface.

This webinar presented the impact and technology of antimicrobial protection for polymer applications by integrating a hygiene function and material protection. SANITIZED AG offers advanced antimicrobial technology products through IMCD Brasil and reinforces the idea of freshness, comfort, and protection with enhanced functionality and performance. IMCD and SANITIZED offer accompanying consultation with product development and performance tests. Furthermore, using the Sanitized® ingredient brand when promoting the final polymer product and in the accompanying marketing activities can highlight the antimicrobial properties in an eye-catching and distinctive manner.

«SANITIZED AG will continue offering webinars, as more than 200 registered for the event, which also included testimonials from professionals in the areas of Health, Design, and Packaging Departments», knows Liliana Rubio. Are you interested in attending a webinar? Please contact us to discuss your needs. We are happy to review your projects and offer our support for any antimicrobial polymer treatment.

Liliana Rubio will be happy to discuss your project with you and offer you the optimal solution for your polymer product.
